Welcome to Junior 6!
Hello everyone! Welcome to our class webpage.
Darragh, Dougie, Emily, Dara, Mati & Ciara are inviting you to keep in touch with their class webpage and see all the great work and activities they will be engaging in over the course of the academic year, under the guidance of their teacher Patrick and SNAs Bernie & Karen.
Together, we will make a superb team - working well, being kind & helpful to our friends & most importantly, keep safe, well & happy in our new class!
Happy days ahead for us all in Junior 6!

Term 3 : April - June 2021.

May 2021

We have a new month and a new season - Welcome May & welcome Summer!  Lots of fun activities to do this term before we get our Summer holidays.

April 2021.

Gardening class in Junior 6!

We loved participating in an inside gardening class with Patrick.  We planted some seeds in trays and we are hoping that with plenty of water and sunshine we will have a wonderful display of blooms soon!

Junior 6 & the Beanstalks!

Picture

In February, we planted beans in jars with some tissue paper.  After a few weeks, they needed to be planted out in some compost.  We bought some seed and potting compost while out on our bus programme.  We planted our beanstalks in individual pots and placed them outside in the sunshine.  We will bring them home in a few weeks time.
We also listened to the story of 'Jack & the Beanstalks'.  What a scary giant!
Following that we completed some lovely numeracy worksheets .

Cherry Blossom Trees

We are all delighted to be back in class after a lovely Easter holiday.  We noticed that our tree outside the class had lovely flowers on it since the last time we were in school.  Lovely pink cherry blossoms.  We created our own cherry blossom trees in class using our arms and hands as a guide and our fingers to create prints that resemble buds and blossoms.  Less washing up of paint brushes for us!!

Term 2 : January - March 2021.

March 2021.

Easter Egg-Citing Activities!

Picture
Another favourite time of the year in Junior 6 is 'Easter'.  What a wonderful window display we created with everything associated with Spring.  Beautiful flowers - daffodils, tulips and hyacinths and most importantly, delicious chocolate Easter eggs!!

Easter Art & a special visitor!

At the beginning of Spring we created a lovely Spring display board in class.  On this board, we displayed our 'Spring Word Wall' as well as our lovely Easter Art.
Before the Easter holidays, we had a very special visitor in our class.  The Easter Bunny!  What a lovely treat for us all too and to get us in the Easter spirit, we all were given a yummy chocolate egg!  How egg-citing!!  Elliot the Emu was very happy too!

Check out the lovely photos of our great work!

Happy Mother's Day!

As special day for the Junior 6 Mums on Sunday 14th March and we have been busy making lovely cards and sweet treats for them to enjoy!  Thanks to our lovely Mums for all they do for us!

Preparations for St. Patrick's Day!

Picture
Our classroom window is looking very colourful with green, white and gold shamrocks to mark St. Patrick's Day on March 17th.  Unfortunately there will be no public parades for the country this year but that won't stop us in Junior 6 having our own celebration within our pod!  Bring on the fun activities!

'Springing' into Art Class!

One of our favourite seasons is Spring.  Lots of celebrations occur in the months of Spring - St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Easter.  So plenty of opportunities to demonstrate our artistic skills!  Check out our Spring Daffodils below which we created from scraps of coloured paper and old egg cartons!  They are 'eggstraordinary'!!

P.E. with Karen!

We were all excited about P.E. lessons with another Karen this term.  Lots of great fun learning activities planned as well as plenty of exercise! Thanks Karen!

Getting to know Elliot!

In January, we received the new addition to our class - in the shape of a big blue, yellow and green emu!  Since then, we have been entertained with all his adventures and Elliot has also helped out in the classroom.  So, this past week, we learned all about Elliot the emu and created some portraits of him for our display boards.  Rumour has it he is very impressed by our efforts!

Goodbye February, hello March!

Welcome to the second month of Spring!  And welcome back to everyone in class!  Double celebrations today!  What better way of catching up with our friends than to go for a lovely walk in the Spring sunshine.  We even had Elliot lead the way for us!
Check us out below!

February 2021.

Welcome back!

We all had a lovely mid-term break and returned fully rested and ready for more work!  What an exciting week we had and the highlight of the week was hearing the news that we will all be together again in class from Monday 1st March!  What a great way to start the second month of Spring!

Signs of Spring!

Mid-Term break has arrived - a time to rest at home after a few great weeks of 'working from home' and also returning to school!

Have a great long weekend!
Happy Mid-Term from all in Junior 6!

S.P.H.E. - Social Outing : 17th February, 2021.

How lucky were we in Junior 6 today to get a social outing ! Paddy, the bus driver had a great welcome for us.  What a surprise it was to discover that Elliot had sneaked out of the classroom and was sitting on the bus, with his seatbelt on, ready for another adventure! Oh Elliot!

Photos for this week....

Pancake Tuesday - 16th February, 2021.

One of our favourite days of the year - Pancake Tuesday!  Elliot has been busy prepping all the ingredients & utensils that we will need for making some pancakes in class later.

Thursday & Friday, 11th & 12th February, 2021.

We were all delighted to hear we could return to school on Thursday the 11th of February.  Not all of us can attend school together so for a little while, we will take turns.  On the days that we can't go to school, we will have Zoom calls so we can see all our friends.
Elliot the emu, had great fun at Circle Time this week.  Check him out mixing up our classroom displays! Silly Elliot!

First Signs of Spring!

Our teacher Patrick was out in his garden today and noticed the first signs of Spring! What a lovely sight to see after the long, cold dark Winter.  Welcome Spring!

*** Update - Sunday, 31st January, 2021. ***

Today, we say 'goodbye' to Winter and we are looking forward to welcoming a new season and month tomorrow.  Spring is one of our favourite seasons - lots of new life, growth & longer days.  We'll conclude our 'Being healthy' theme also but will continue to be fit and healthy everyday.  Elliot had a busy weekend searching for healthy foods to eat.  I think he might even have been looking for a job in the fruit and veg shop!  What a cheeky emu!  Check out the photos below.

*** Update -  Week of 25th-29th January, 2021. ***

As we are now in our last week of January and also the last week of Winter, our theme this week will focus on 'Being Healthy'.

Now, let's think about all the foods we eat to keep healthy.  Junior 6 are very healthy eaters - lots of fruits and vegetables, and we all love to drink water.  It's important to know that we all have different likes and dislikes when it comes to foods and drinks - some like oranges and others may not, some like carrots and more prefer brocoli.  Some like juice, while others prefer milk.  That's all fine.  It's always a good idea to try out new foods and then see if we like them or not.
Take a look at the story below and spot all the foods you like and those you dislike.  You can use the headings 'Like' & 'Dislike' to categorise them.  Try not to get too hungry!!

Exercise & Healthy Recipes

On Tuesday, we had our Zoom class meeting.  It was lovely to see everyone.  We began our meeting with 'circle-time' and then we had an exercise routine to one of our favourite songs - 'Jump Up, Bend Down'.  It was great fun and we thought it was very funny to see Patrick, Bernie & Karen joining in!
Take a listen to the song below.

After our exercise routine, we all made a healthy snack for lunch.  Some of us made sandwiches - cheese, ham, chicken.  Some of us made other healthy snacks - salads and rice dishes.  Yummy!
Check out some more healthy recipes below.  Click on each one and print at home.

After you try out some of the recipes above, why not try make some hopscotch mats.  Be sure to have an adult help you especially with those scissors!

It is also very important to remember that to stay healthy you need a good night's sleep and also some time to relax during the day.
Check out the video below on how to make a fort inside your house - a great fun idea especially on a rainy day!

Elliot the Emu!

We all welcomed 'Elliot the Emu' to Junior 6 at the beginning of the month.  He is a great assistant to our staff especially during our Zoom meetings.  There was great noise from him this week when he showed us all the new playground equipment in our school.  By the looks of the video below, it seems Elliot had a great adventure over the weekend!

Season's Greetings!

Holidays are here!  What a great first term in Junior 6 - all working hard and progressing well!  Our teacher is very proud of us all!
Happy Christmas to all from us all in Junior 6!
See you in the New Year!

What a busy month we've been having!  Lots of preparation for our online Christmas Concert - we focused on a photostory segment which was accompanied by one of our favourite Christmas songs.  Here are some of the great moments captured on camera by the staff in our class.
And here is the final product!  Happy viewing!
S.P.H.E & Literacy
Here we are off to post our letter to Santa.  You can tell it was a wet windy day but we have heard it safely arrived at the North Pole! Hurray for that!

Here we are busy making Christmas photo baubles for the lovely tree in our classroom.  Great little workers we are!

Christmas Display Boards

A Special Visitor!

Well, we were all delighted and excited to hear that Santa Claus could visit our school - we just had to wait for the date to be announced.  So with great delight, he safely landed on the school roof on the 16th of December!  What lovely gifts he brought us too!
Picture

Christmas Gifts!

This year, we made lovely Christmas floral arrangements for our families.  Hopefully they all loved them!

November 2020

We are all delighted to be back in class after a lovely Mid-Term Break.  We said 'goodbye' to Autumn before our break and we welcomed our new season Winter on the 1st of November.  What a difference a few days makes to the outside environment.  We were all sorry to see the last of the Autumn leaves on the tree outside our classroom window but we know that before they can return in the Springtime, we have to look at it's bare branches for the Winter season.
Picture

Circle-Time meets Geography & Art!

We all enjoy circle-time each morning. We talk about who is in school today, the day and date, the season, the current weather and a schedule of activities for the day.  We spoke about the new season and what clothes we need for the chilly days.  Later in art class, we created a poster of winter clothes.  All posters are displayed on our classroom display board alongside our 'Winter Word Wall'. Needless to say, we are all excited about a certain event that occurs in December!  By looking at our word wall, have a guess at what that event might be!!

S.P.H.E. & P.E.

What a great sight to see that we all hadn't forgotten the health education lessons relating to Coronavirus.  We were straight back to washing our hands, using the hand sanitizer and cleaning our workstations.  As well as remembering to cough and sneeze into our elbows.
Check us out below .......... Junior 6 Covid busters!

We also continued to keep healthy by dancing to some running music!  Great fun we had too but we were all exhausted after it!

We've all noticed how cold it has been since we returned to school in November.  In circle-time, we linked our SESE lessons with Art.  We learnt about seasonal changes and things that are 'hot & cold'.  We also spoke about one of our favourite movies - 'Happy Feet'.  In art class, we made our very own penguins and gave them a name of our choice.  Check out all the happy penguins!

S.E.S.E. & Numeracy - Science Week 8th-13th Nov.

We all love carrying out experiments in Junior 6. As this is National Science Week, we carried out lots of different experiments this week which linked in with our Numeracy lessons.  We needed to measure different liquids for the experiments. We also created bar charts at the end of the week to represent who liked each experiment.  Great work by all!
Check out some of our great experiments we carried out during Science Week!

October 2020

We all love the month of October.  Lots of fun things to look forward to - Baboró, Mid-term Break & Hallowe'en!  We began the month continuing with our Autumn theme.  Some of our lessons focused on the theme of 'A Scarecrow'.  Here we are working on making our own individual scarecrows for our display board.  Check in to see the finished product soon!
In Music & Drama classes, we pretended to be scarecrows and danced along to the song 'Dingle Dangle Scarecrow. We make a great bunch of scarecrows!  In Communication & Literacy class, we all enjoyed the story 'The Scarecrow's Wedding' by Julia Donaldson, one of our favourite authors.
We have been so busy completing our scarecrows for the display board in the corridor.  It was a very tricky task but the staff helped us create superb scarecrows!  Let's hope no crows visit St. Joseph's or they will be very scared!!

Baboró 2020 comes to St. Joseph's!
There was great excitement in our school when Baboró came to visit!  What a great show we all participated in.  Huge thanks to Phillida & team.  We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Hallowe'en Activities!

One of our favourite times of year has arrived!  We have been very busy creating some lovely Hallowe'en art, reading some Hallowe'en themed stories as well as incorporating Hallowe'en into our Drama, Music & Numeracy lessons.

Goodbye Autumn!  We went on a nature walk around the school grounds to mark the last month of Autumn.  When we return after Mid-Term break, it will the season of Winter.  What a lovely photo of Junior 6 pod under a lovely autumn tree!
Picture

Check out our lovely Hallowe'en display board.  Lots of scary witches taking flight on their broomsticks and casting spells around a caldron.  We also made some spooky black cats.

Hallowe'en Costumes & a new teacher!

On Friday the 23rd of October, we had our annual dress-up day for Hallowe'en.  A little different this year in that we had a Junior and Senior parade outside, showing off our lovely costumes.  It was great to see everyone dressed up.  We also had a new teacher this morning - Mr. Gobbles!  He told us he ate Patrick but we weren't too sure about that as he wore the same jacket as Patrick.  It was good that Mr. Gobbles wore a face mask though - he obviously heard about the pandemic!  Thankfully, he didn't stay too long &  Patrick was back to us after snack. Phew!
Check out our great photos below.
Happy Hallowe'en from all in Junior 6.  Have a good rest over Mid-Term break and we will be ready again for plenty more exciting activities in November.  Stay safe and keep well!

September 2020

We are all thrilled to be back in our school again! We are working hard in our classroom making sure we remember to wash our hands, cover our sneezes and keeping a safe distance from each other. Our teacher tells us we are doing a great job!

Music Class with Cormac

Autumn Art

On Tuesday morning, we welcomed back Cormac to our class for music.  We all sat 2 metres away from each other and played lots of different instruments.  It was great fun!

We've been very busy on our Autumn theme since we returned to school.  Lots of work on trees, leaves and animals we see in Autumn.

Picture
Here is our classroom with all our socially distanced workstations.  We are working very well at taking responsibility for all our own belongings.  We are continuing to be very careful about remembering to keep all our own belongings to ourselves and not share them with our friends.  The staff tell us we are doing a great job!

This week in music class we learned how to play the bodhrán to some traditional Irish music.  Check us out ......... we would make a great band!
Picture

We are progressing very well with work on on Autumn theme.  This week we learnt about 'the hedgehog' and made some cosy leaf beds for them to sleep in.  We also revised all the words associated with the season using our word mats.  Our display board in the classroom is looking great!

Celebrating Culture Night 2020

Friday, the 18th September is Culture Night.  Here in Junior 6, we watched some video clips of previous Culture Nights in Galway.  We also watched the 1994 Riverdance performance and tried our own version after!  Great fun!
