SENIOR 5

Welcome to the Senior 5 web page. This year the class teacher is Annette. The SNA's are Ann and Clodagh, who are joined by Marzena in the afternoon.

Spring

Spring is the season when trees, plants, and flowers start to bud, grow and bloom. Plants need water, light, warmth, and soil or compost to grow. They get the perfect conditions they need to grow in spring - when we often have more rain showers and sunlight compared to the cold winter.

Tulips and Daffodils

During the Autumn we planted Tulip and Daffodil bulbs. This week we paid a visit to the school garden to monitor their progress and we were pleasantly surprised to see all the colourful Spring flowers.

Planting Vegetable Seeds

We planted garden peas and climbing french beans. The seeds will germinate grow bigger over the next few weeks. Hopefully during the summer months we will be able to pick the peas and beans and eat them.

Cookery - French Toast

  • step 1 - Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla essence and cinnamon together. Lay a slice of bread in a shallow dish and pour the egg mixture over them. Allow to soak for 1-2 mins, then turn it over carefully and soak for 2 mins more.
  • step 2 - Heat the non-stick frying pan on a medium heat. Spray vegetable oil into the frying pan. Carefully lift a slice of the soaked bread out of the dish and add to the frying pan. Fry for 3 mins on each side, until golden and crisp, then place on a plate.
  • step 3- Serve dusted in icing sugar.

Making Static Electricity

Static electricity can occur when an electric charge builds up on an object. You can make this happen by rubbing certain objects together. We had a lesson on how to make static electricity with a balloon and pieces of paper, and by rubbing a balloon against your hair.

Winter

Winter is usually one of the coldest seasons. It can bring freezing cold temperatures, ice and snow.

Feed the Birds

Picture

It was very cold in January. The temperatures dropped so low that we had frost and ice on the ground. The birds find it difficult to get food. There are no berries and wild seeds left on the hedgerows, so there is very little food for them to eat. The birds need to eat constantly to keep their body weight.

We made bird feeders so that the birds don't go hungry.

Art                     Penguins

Picture
Emperor Penguins are the largest of all the different types of penguins. Emperor penguins spend their whole lives in Antarctica. Antartica is very very cold. The adult penguins have a black head, a black tail, a black back and black wings but they have a white stomach. They also have gold/yellow markings on their head and neck.

Take a look at how we made Emperor penguins using plastic bottles, plastic lids, paper, card and black tape and glue.

We created samples of each of the cards which we designed. Then we asked the staff of St. Josephs Special School to place orders. Our classroom turned into a workshop, just
like Santas' workshop in the North Pole.

We made extra cards and
sold them at a
Christmas Fair in our school hall.

We counted up all the money we earned from selling the Christmas cards.
Then we had to deduct our expenses from that amount. Our expenses included coloured card, coloured paper, patterned paper, glue sticks e
tc.

AUTUMN

It's the season of Autumn. During the season of Autumn the leaves fall from the trees, the evenings become darker and the days and nights gradually get colder.

Halloween Art

The festival of Halloween arrives at the end of Autumn on October 31st. It is a time when children and adults dress up in fancy costumes. Some people carve faces onto hollowed out pumpkins, play games and go trick or treating.  This pagan festival began hundreds of years ago.

We made Halloween monsters during our art class with our teacher.

In our school orchard the apples also begin to ripen during the season of Autumn. So we decided to use the apples to make a cake. Follow us on the apples journey from the apple tree to our table.
