Molly, Jonathan, Paddy and Roisin from Colaiste Iognaid joined us this week at lunchtime to organise games and socialise with our pupils. Here are a few pictures (in classic black and white) from Junior play. This is another aspect of the Social Outreach Programme we operate with the Jes.
We started our swimming programme today in Leisureland. 51 of our students have signed up for swimming lessons which will run every Friday for the entire year. We have 40 Transition Year students from Coláiste Iognáid (known in Galway as the Jes) helping out in the pool.
There was great excitment today when our pupils met this years group of helpers. Already many of the TY students have been partenered with pupils from St Joseph's. They will have an opportunity to work with the same person each week developing their swimming ability while at the same time building a personal relationship.
This programme is always a great sucess which is reflected in the numbers of our pupils who learn to swim confidently. Today there were 15 pupils swimming lenghts and another 13 developing their skills in the deep end of the pool.
Parents, families and friends are welcome to come to Leisureland on Friday mornings (11.00-11.45) to observe the session.
St Joseph’s is a special school under the patronage of the voluntary organisation Ability West. Education in all aspects of the primary school curriculum is provided for pupils between the ages 4- 18 who have moderate general learning disabilities. Programmes are designed to meet individual needs so as to enable pupils to reach their full potential.
