Our pupils did really well this year in the annual Advertiser Art Competition. Lovely prizes were presented last week for individual and class entries.
Sgt John Ainsworth visited today to present the school with the National Flag and a copy of the Proclamation of Independence.
Kawthar Yahya read part of the Proclamation. This was followed by three pupils singing a song. Sgt Ainsworth explained how to care for the flag and the protocol to be observed when flying it.
After the presentation we sang Amhráin na bhFiann.
We hope everyone had a nice Christmas. 2016 is getting off to a great start in St Joseph's as we are preparing for a visit next Wednesday afternoon from members of the defence forces who are coming to present the school with the National Flag. This is part of the national commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising where every primary school in the state is formally presented with a flag and told what it symbolises and how to care for it.(http://www.military.ie/en/info-centre/defence-forces-2016/flags-for-schools-initiative/)
The hall is going to be decorated with miniature flags made by the pupils and some pupils will sing a song.
St Joseph’s is a special school under the patronage of the voluntary organisation Ability West. Education in all aspects of the primary school curriculum is provided for pupils between the ages 4- 18 who have moderate general learning disabilities. Programmes are designed to meet individual needs so as to enable pupils to reach their full potential.
